Principal's Message

Dear Wonderful EBPS families,

Welcome to Week 3 of Term 2.

I hope that Term 2 is going well for all of our families so far. As always, I continue to feel incredibly thankful to be part of such a caring and supportive community here at East Bentleigh Primary School. It is through our shared work together — families, staff, and community — that our children are able to thrive, grow, and feel supported in their learning and wellbeing.

There are certainly lots of exciting things happening around the school at the moment, and it has been wonderful to see students so engaged, enthusiastic, and connected in their learning and school experiences.

Working Bee – Thank You

A very big thank you to everyone who attended and supported our recent Working Bee. It was wonderful to see families, staff, and community members coming together to help improve and care for our school grounds.

Many hands truly do make light work, and the sense of community throughout the morning was fantastic. Jobs completed included gardening, tidying outdoor spaces, maintenance work, and creating a welcoming area near Nikki’s kitchen.

A special thank you to Jane Ross for helping coordinate the day and ensuring everything ran so smoothly. We are also incredibly grateful to all of the families and volunteers who generously gave up their time to support our school. Community support like this makes a real difference and helps strengthen the wonderful village that exists around EBPS.

Year 5/6 Camp – Lord Somers

Our Year 5/6 students recently returned from their camp at Lord Somers, and by all reports it was an incredibly successful and memorable experience.

Today, one student spoke to me with enormous enthusiasm about the activities they participated in — paddleboarding, cooking, night activities, games, and the many opportunities students had to challenge themselves, work together, and support one another. Hearing the excitement and joy in their voice was wonderful.

I was particularly proud to hear how well our students represented East Bentleigh Primary School throughout the camp. The way they supported each other, included others, demonstrated resilience, and embraced new experiences is exactly what it means to be an EBPS student.

Experiences like camp create lifelong memories for children, while also helping them build independence, teamwork, confidence, and strong relationships with their peers.

An especially big thank you must go to the staff who worked so hard to organise, coordinate, and attend the camp. These opportunities require an enormous amount of planning, care, and commitment behind the scenes, and we are very grateful for all they do to provide such rich and valuable experiences for our students.

Book Fair – Starting Next Week!

Our annual Book Fair begins next week!

Jane Ross — our wonderful librarian and truly a “doer-of-all-things” around the school — will once again be coordinating the event. Please refer to the next page for more information about where and when you can purchase from the fair.

Books remain incredibly important for children, even in today’s highly digital world. Reading helps develop imagination, vocabulary, comprehension, empathy, concentration, and curiosity about the world around us. Most importantly, fostering a love of reading from a young age can open doors to lifelong learning.

One of the greatest gifts we can give children is a love of books and stories. Whether it is reading independently, reading together as a family, or simply talking about books at home, these experiences make a lasting difference to children’s development and learning.

We look forward to another exciting and successful Book Fair at EBPS!

Grade 5/6 – Lord Somers Camp - Update

What a fabulous camp! Grade 5/6 were treated to perfect weather for their much-anticipated camp, and they made the most of every moment.

Students threw themselves into a wonderful range of activities including kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, beach games, initiatives challenges and pizza making. The energy and enthusiasm on show were wonderful to see.

A special mention must go to our young camp leaders, who were outstanding. They brought incredible energy and passion to every session — playing music during the beach games, connecting genuinely with our students and creating an atmosphere that was fun, inclusive and memorable for everyone involved. Teachers had just as much fun as the students!

The entertainment between activities kept the excitement going from start to finish, and the food was simply delicious — everyone was extremely well looked after throughout the entire camp experience.

A huge thank you to all involved for making it such a special experience for our Grade 5/6 students. The smiles said it all. :)

Prep Steiner Update

Autumn has definitely arrived now with the beautiful gum blossoms and some wattle trees starting to bloom. Looks like we will have our first dose of Melbourne autumn this week with sun now and rain later. Lots of interesting bugs, flowers and seed pods are being found in the prep garden and the children have continued their baking, drawing and river making. We also added some more rakes to the tool shed which the children have been busy with, clearing up the she-oak and gum leaves.

The children have done some beautiful paintings from our Mother Holle story – you’ll find them up in the classrooms if you’d like to take a peek. It’s wonderful to see them exploring colour each week.

Please remember to sign your child in or out if you arrive late or need to leave early. It is very important we keep this accurate for the children’s safety.

Planning has already begun for our Mid-winter Festival at the end of term. Make sure you have the 22nd June marked in your diary so you don’t miss this magical evening!

Warm wishes, Alison, Sarah & Emma - Steiner Prep Team

Class 34MR - Maths Activities

Class 34MR have been learning multiplication strategies for working with large numbers. One strategy is through using arrays. We practiced our times tables through using the language of arrays. 9 rows of 6 is equivalent 9 x 6 which is 54. We applied this to working out how many beans we had for a winter crop at the farm.

Each group was given a separate bag of beans to sort and count. There were broad beans and climbing beans all mixed together in different amounts. Each group formed arrays or 2, 5, 6, 9 and 12. The total number of beans were then worked out through arranging the beans in these arrays. The class had a lot of fun learning about multiplication through a real-world useful application. It will be wonderful to see how many beans grow once they are planted!
